As of today, the number 6 all-time viewed post is EVENT: Heidi Ruby Miller Guest Editor at Pennwriters 2013. That PW Conference was held in Pittsburgh (it alternates between the Burgh and Lancaster each year) and I was the managing editor at Dog Star Books, the science fiction imprint I created for Raw Dog Screaming Press. I took dozens of pitches, a few of which ended up as acquisitions. John Edward Lawson and Jennifer Barnes were also editor guests, and Jason Jack Miller and Matt Betts were author guests so we had a busy, but wonderful time.

Here's another CAST YOUR CHARACTERS for the number 7 spot of all-time most-viewed posts (as of today), and this one belongs to my husband, Jason Jack Miller, and his award-winning novel HELLBENDER, part of the Murder Ballads and Whiskey series.

Since Jason isn't one for shining a light on his own accomplishments, I'm quite happy to: Hellbender (Raw Dog Screaming Press) won the Arthur J. Rooney Award for Fiction, the McLaughlin Scholarship, and was a finalist for the Appalachian Writers Association Book of the Year in 2013.

See who was cast for HELLBENDER at the original post.

Counting down my most visited posts (as of today), we start with Number 10 - BOOK: The Curiosity Killers by K.W. Taylor.

Published in 2015 by Dog Star Books, The Curiosity Killers was K.W. Taylor's thesis novel in Seton Hill University's Writing Popular Fiction MFA program, and I was one of her mentors, along with Tim Waggoner. We both gave her back cover blurbs because it was such a great book. Here's what I had to say:

"From the moment you read that first paragraph, K.W. Taylor zaps you through

CELEBRATION: 500,000 Views at Heidi Ruby Miller: Tom Monteleone and Starrie Giveaway

To celebrate 500,000 views and counting at, I'm highlighting my most visited posts this week and...

...making my latest book, STARRIE, free on Amazon for the first time ever. The celebration (and free books) run from Tuesday, December 20 - Saturday, December 24, 2016.

Many thanks to my readers and fans as well as the multitudes of authors who have been gracious interviewees since I began this site back in 2005.

My very first post was a book review of The Complete Idiot's Guide to Writing a Novel by Thomas F. Monteleone. Tom was my first mentor in Seton Hill University's Writing Popular Fiction Graduate Program and remains very dear to my heart. Jason and I still bring out bits of advice from his book and from chats with Tom at school.

He is known, of course, for his international bestselling and critically acclaimed Blood of the Lamb, as well as numerous other novels and short stories, and as co-editor with his wife Elizabeth Monteleone

HEIDI'S PICK SIX: Michael Gills

1. Which of your characters is your favorite?

2. Tell me about your travels.
In 2014, we were pilgrims on Camino de Santiago–my wife, daughter and I--from the Pyrenees to the Atlantic we biked across norther Spain. After the Navarro heat and the wine fields of Rioja, Leon’s dazzling stained glass and the climb over O’Cebreiro, on the last day’s ride to Santiago, three of us pushed bicycles the last fifty yards. There was a man in a green kilt who played bagpipes in the shade of the stone arch entrance. The high notes soared through the passway and delivered us to the field of light before the cathedral. And when we walked onto the courtyard and beheld the time-worn stones of its face, the three spires rising and rising before us, the mid-afternoon sun full on it, and above, the man-sized James, a fishermen, as lore had it, beckoned and I forgot the flesh wound in my side and thought to fall down and weep jubilantly, just as all of the others who ma…

Try gators, a grandmother, and gold.

The De'Laruse matriarch carries a secret from the Civil War era, and it's high time to tear down the accompanying rumor mill. More than a hundred and fifty years ago, French gold was captured when the ship aiding the Confederacy tried to run the Union blockade. Addie enlists the help of Vicki Bohanan and her granddaughter, best bud Janine De'Laruse, to decode the clues left in a Union soldier's journal to solve the mystery once and for all concerning what happened to the bars emblazoned with the fleur-de-lis imprint.

As if Vicki doesn't have enough concerns to occupy her week. Between fighting off Janine's oversexed younger brother, a mysterious maid of questionable conduct, and the sperm donor breathing down her neck - not to mention those grum…

BOOK: Jennara in Flux (Beneath the Willow Book II) by A. J. Culey

JENNARA IN FLUX (Beneath the Willow Book II)

They released the ancestral magicks of Lutia upon an unsuspecting world.
Now they must find the courage to spin that wild power.

After one hundred and thirty years, the magicks have finally been released. With them, though, come unexpected dangers and blessings. Wild and unclaimed, the magicks are transforming the world faster than its people can comprehend, infusing the lands with new life while bringing its people to the brink of war.

The Royals have decreed that none may spin the magicks, upon penalty of death, sparking whispers of rebellion everywhere. Sehmah and Takeem, considered traitors to the throne for releasing the magicks, have been forced to retreat into the mountains of Lixor to escape execution. Separated from them and taken against her will into spinner territory, Jennifer struggles to adjust to the magicks she’s unexpectedly absorbed and the pivotal role she now plays in a war she never wanted to be part of, in a world…

HEIDI'S PICK SIX: Carrie Gessner

1. Which of your characters is your favorite?
I like all of them for different reasons! But just in The Dying of the Golden Day, even if I lean toward Aurelia, I have to go with Mira. She’s smart, funny, confident, and badass enough to have conquered an empire. She’s kind of everything I want to be (yes, including the empire conquering!).

2. Tell me about your travels.

3. Coffee, tea, or milk?
Tea! My favorite is black Earl Grey.

4. What else can you do besides write?

5. Who are you reading right now?
For a writer, I have terrible reading habits and hop between a bunch of books at once. My primary books right now are The Day Lasts More Than a Hundred Years by Chingiz Aimatov, The Elegant Universe by Brian Greene, and Bombshells Vol 1: Enlisted by Marguerite Bennett and Marguerite Sauvage.

6. Pop culture or academia?
7. What is the toughest scene you ever wrote?
8. Where do you find your inspirations to write?

9. Food you could eat every day.
Pizza. I have s…

EVENT: PARSEC Talk "How Chronic Pain Has Made Me More Autotelic" by Heidi Ruby Miller

Meeting October 8, 2016 - Heidi Ruby Miller
"How Chronic Pain Has Made Me More Autotelic"

What started as a forced transition due to health concerns has turned into a wondrous full-circle journey as a creator, both metaphorically and globally. This is how I found my way back from writing as a daily business to embracing my words as the artistic endeavor it is.

INTERVIEW: Heidi Ruby Miller by Michael A. Arnzen at SIGMA

EXCERPT: Last year I gave a talk on “The Popular Uncanny” at Parsec, and Heidi Ruby Miller (my colleague in the MFA program at Seton Hill U, and my co-editor for the book, Many Genres One Craft), kindly interviewed me about the subject for SIGMA. I decided to return the favor, as she’s coming to speak to the group again on October 8th. If you haven’t met her before, you’ll see that Heidi is always effervescent and excited to talk about genre fiction. Here’s a taste of her wide range of interests and passions.

MIKE: Tell us briefly about your latest book, STARRIE.

HEIDI: Starrie was a nice side project within the Ambasadora-verse that adds to the main series’ mythos and sets up some events in Book 2: Scarred by Light. Surprisingly, it’s been my most critically acclaimed book so far, even though it’s not part of the original series.

Read the entire interview in SIGMA.

EVENT: DogCon 5 at Broadkill Writers Resort

DogCon is a big shindig that publisher Raw Dog Screaming Press holds every year to celebrate books, authors and all our supporters. It’s a chance for the RDSP family to get together, meet each other, show off the latest works and begin new creative ventures.

DogCon 5 at Broadkill Beach in Milton, DE!

At last year’s DogCon we announced that we were acquiring a beach house writing resort. This year, we’re inviting you to come see it! Activities will be running Friday to Monday but Saturday, October 1st and Sunday October 2nd will be the main event.

Each DogCon is different and this one will be more about strengthening the RDSP author community than having public book events. Activities on Saturday & Sunday afternoon/evening will be aimed at the public but other times will be more for the authors. However, anyone is still welcome to hang out the whole time. Plans are evolving but here are some of the things we will definitely do:

Group meals/snacks (likely a shrimp boil, s’mores…

BOOK: Steel Magic by J.L. Gribble

Funerals are usually the end of the story, not the beginning.

Newly graduated warrior-mages Toria Connor and Kane Nalamas find themselves the last remaining mages in the city when a mage school teacher mysteriously falls ill and dies. But taking over the school themselves isn't in the cards. They're set to become professional mercenaries-if they make it through the next 18 months as journeymen first.

The debate over whether to hunt mutated monsters in the Wasteland or take posh bodyguard jobs is put on hold when a city elder hires them to solve the mystery of the disappearing mages. Toria and Kane's quest brings them to the British colonial city of New Angouleme, where their initial investigation reveals that the problem is even greater than they feared.

But when a friend is kidnapped, they'll have to travel to the other side of the globe to save her, save themselves, and save magic itself.

By day, J. L. Gribble is a professional m…
