WORKSHOPS This week ( Wednesday, February 8 ) at the UPL Writers Workshop, we'll be learning how to format a manuscript and do a critique of another writer's work. The weekly meetings will include a short writing lesson, writing tips and advice, and a discussion about members’ work.  We'll be using lessons from  Many Genres One Craft .  Each lecture and activity will be self-contained in case you can't attend every week.   This is a great opportunity to meet fellow writers, talk about your ideas, and explore your creativity. The idea arose during a casual conversation between four Fayette County locals – two published authors and two television producers: Why not gather people and resources from across the state and country for a televised celebration of everything related to reading and writing?  From that chat, the Pennsylvania Literary Festival was born, and now, the building blocks are in place for a weekend-long festival, to be held at the Uniontown Mall May 30 through June 1. The Pennsylvania Literary Festival , or #PAlitFest, as it is abbreviated by its growing group of followers on the social media Website, Twitter, will be coordinated by a team that is led by Fayette Community Television representatives Matthew Dowling and Dave Slusarick and husband-and-wife authors Jason Jack and Heidi Ruby Miller, who had the initial burst of inspiration for the event. BOOKS This weekend the Fallingwater Book Club met to discuss Erik Larson's bestselling book The Devil in the White City . In this true story of the 1893 World's Fair held in Chicago, we find out about Daniel Burnham* who was Director of Works for the fair and who somehow brought this grandiose celebration to fruition, as well as Dr. H.H. Holmes , the serial murderer who used the fair as a venue to sate his grisly addiction. Of course, the descriptions of architecture were just as interesting to this Frank Lloyd Wright crowd as the darker details of the women murdered by Holmes. Some attendees read pertinent passages and some had done extra research about the fair and the participants. Many pointed out how this early feat would have impacted Mr. Wright, especially as he was working with Louis Sullivan on part of the fair. Good-byes Last week Uniontown lost a wonderful woman, Mrs. Bernardine Hagan , the former owner of Frank Lloyd Wright's House on Kentuck Knob . Even at 100, she remained involved in the community through various clubs and organizations. She was my neighbor and I would like to think my friend. I had the honor to work closely with her on official Kentuck Knob business as well as the casual neighborhood happenings. Events Light Up Night 2009 in Downtown Uniontown PHOTO BY Jason Jack Miller We ate popcorn and drank hot chocolate with our friend Laura Tebbitt as the Holiday Parade went by on Main Street in downtown Uniontown . Though a rainy night, the large crowd still seemed full of spirit. Afterward, we had dinner at J. Pauls and won the trivia contest. Very enjoyable evening and a great way to kick off the Christmas season.
