EVENT: AWP 2022 in Philadelphia

Image
AWP was our first in-person conference in two years, and it felt good to be back among writers. Here I am with Mike Arnzen representing our genres. Our Seton Hill table had several recognizable faces, even under the masks, including MFA director Nicole Peeler (pictured with Jason above, above) and Natalie and Matt Duvall. We also ran into other academic friends: Gerry LaFemina (pictured with Mike and Jason), William Hamilton, Tod Goldberg , and Anthony Kapolka. And Jason got to meet Taylor Mali in person to tell him he borrowed his "What Teachers Make" TedTalk for the Pennwriters Keynote in 2019, "What Writers Make." As an added bonus, we got to stay at The Notary Hotel , an ultra-cool spot just down the block from the Pennsylvania Convention Center .

Book: Hazard Yet Forward Anthology

Image
BOOKS Giant multi-author anthology on sale Tuesday, August 7 to benefit cancer fighter. My story "Feeling Blue Today" is part of the charity anthology, Hazard Yet Forward . This story is a tie-in to my thriller Atomic Zion . And I am in excellent company. Matt Duvall , Natalie Duvall , and Deanna Lepsch compiled the nearly 700 page, multi-genre eBook with stories from seventy-six writers who are connected to the Seton Hill University Writing Popular Fiction program . All proceeds from this project will benefit Donna Munro , a 2004 graduate of the program. Munro, a teacher living in St. Louis, Missouri, was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. An active member of the SHU WPF alumni committee , Munro helps organize the school’s annual writing conference, the In Your Write Mind Workshop . To aid Munro and her family, faculty members, alumni, students and friends of the Writing Popular Fiction program quickly responded to compile this massive anthology. The boo...

Conference: 2011 Pennwriters Conference - A Retrospective

Image
The energy at this year's Pennwriters Conference is still surging through me! I'm channeling it to work on two novellas in the Ambasadora-verse and finish up the second full-length novel in the series, so I barely have time for this post, but I had to give a little retrospective, mostly in photo form, like the one below of Jason and me with Saturday Keynote Speaker Jonathan Maberry. His speech should be required reading for the business--its theme was positivity and community, two sentiments I have always embraced when it comes to writing and the business of writing. Thanks to the participants in our all-day intensive workshop Many Genres, One Craft, based on our new writing guide of the same name. ( Buy it at Amazon right now! ) Seton Hill Writers ( Timons Esaias , Heidi Ruby Miller , Jason Jack Miller , Natalie Duvall, Matt Duvall, and Michael A. Arnzen ) taught one hour sessions on craft in the morning, then career in the afternoon. Each participant received a free har...

PUBLICATION: Sounds in the Jungle by Heidi Ruby Miller in Eye Contact

PUBLICATIONS I received my copy of Eye Contact today for my short story "Sounds in the Jungle" and was pleasantly surprised to see one of Jason 's photos ("Wave Swinger") in there as well. Filled with death, loss, and mourning, this was a beautifully dark issue, appropriate as we come close to the winter solstice. Here is a peek at the table of contents, which includes work from some of my former students and other Seton Hill Writers : Eyes by Patrick Schober Bloom by Passion Hannah Aquila by Christine Telfer Living Grace by Maddie Gillespie Memorial by Stephanie Pikula Kalina by Molly Follmer Sounds in the Jungle by Heidi Ruby Miller Tá Mé I Ngrá Leat by Lyndsey Basham Lesson by Judith R.
