EVENT: Broadkill Writers Resort Spring Retreat

Image
As writers, we crave inspiration and a new perspective for our creativity. Joining friends and other creators at Broadkill Writers Resort is one of the best ways for Jason and me to pause and reimagine. This retreat is run by one of our publishers, Raw Dog Screaming Press , and the owners, Jennifer Barnes and John Edward Lawson who are pictured with us above. Ten minutes from the town of Milton and along the Delaware Bay, this large, but quaint, resort home is just past Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge , 10,000 acres of marshes, ponds, swamps, grasslands, and forest that provide protection for threatened and endangered species. The beach is never crowded, giving it an almost solitary feel and perfect for reflection and rejuvenation. We've been there a dozen times and have some great traditions now, like crab boils, puzzle builds, and beach campfires. I'm sure we'll be heading back a couple more times this year, too.

CELEBRATIONS The 500,000 views celebration is in full swing here at www.heidirubymiller.com . I'm now at 506,000 and STARRIE is #51 free in all of science fiction on Amazon and #2 in space opera . Many thanks to my readers and fans as well as the multitudes of authors who have been gracious interviewees  since I began this site back in  2005 .  Here's another CAST YOUR CHARACTERS for the number 7 spot of all-time most-viewed posts (as of today), and this one belongs to my husband, Jason Jack Miller , and his award-winning novel HELLBENDER , part of the Murder Ballads and Whiskey series . Since Jason isn't one for shining a light on his own accomplishments, I'm quite happy to: Hellbender (Raw Dog Screaming Press) won the Arthur J. Rooney Award for Fiction, the McLaughlin Scholarship, and was a finalist for the Appalachian Writers Association Book of the Year in 2013. See who was cast for HELLBENDER...

COVER REVEAL: Indelible Ink by Matt Betts

COVER REVEALS PREORDER NOW! It's what's inside that counts. Something lurks inside Deena Riordan. She never once questioned her life in the criminal underworld as the star of Mr. Marsh’s illegal empire and his youngest assassin. Her ruthless demeanor and dark magical powers have kept her at the top of the heap for years. But one day she pushes the sorcery too far and something snaps. Only then does Deena realize she’s always been a puppet of that dark power with no true will of her own. Now, in order to get out of the crime business for good, she needs to save her sister from Marsh’s angry clutches. It won’t be easy. She’ll have to make her way through friends turned foes, dodge determined federal agents, and stay out of a particularly stubborn fellow hitman’s sights. Worst of all, Deena will have to wrestle with the darkness inside to keep it from swallowing her up again. NEWS: Heidi Ruby Miller Steps Down from Dog Star Books

Image
NEWS It has been an incredible and fulfilling two years as the managing editor at RDSP's science fiction imprint, Dog Star Books , and now I'm ready to focus on new opportunities with my teaching at Seton Hill and my writing. I learned so much about the business while at DSB. Thank you to Jennifer Barnes and John Edward Lawson, owners of Raw Dog Screaming Press and all its imprints, for giving me this once in a lifetime opportunity to create and shape an entire line of books. I'm very proud of the imprint, the stories, my co-editor, Deanna Sjolander, my amazing cover artist, Bradley Sharp , and especially the wonderful authors, and I wish them all much success. I look forward to watching Dog Star shine bright into the future with all this hard-earned momentum behind them. Look out, 2015!

INTERVIEW: The Lost Geek Girl Interview with Jennifer Barnes

Image
INTERVIEWS One year ago I interviewed my good friend Jennifer Barnes for a column about geek girls. I'm happy finally to bring it to my readers and show her how much I appreciated the time she took out of her busy schedule to do the interview for me. Please welcome publishing tycoon and figist—yes, you heard right, figist—Jennifer Barnes! A Love Affair with Books I have always been a geek about books. As a child learning to read I struggled with dyslexia but once it clicked I read EVERYTHING. I spent a lot of time on classics and then works from outsider groups like women's and African-American lit. I also read a lot of horror novels. Of course I majored in English in college and worked in a library—I was in charge of the circulation desk on Saturdays and would read all day. Eventually I went into the graphic design field but when my husband began to get interested in a writing career I helped edit his work. Together we took over operations of an ezine called The Drea...

Greenshift Pre-order and Contest

"Miller's characters blaze with life and lust and depth, and her world is a dichotomy of the glamorously sensual and the brutally dangerous." -Mary SanGiovanni, Bram Stoker nominated author of THE HOLLOWER trilogy "I knew from page two of Greenshift that I had a writer-crush on Heidi Ruby Miller. I mean, holy crap, this girl can write! This is how you write Science-Fiction." -Cary Caffrey, best selling author of THE GIRLS FROM ALCYONE "The action and romance are seamlessly woven together, transporting us and leaving us petulant for more when the story is over." -from the foreword by Dana Marton, best selling author of THE THIRD SCROLL Greenshift is a tale set within the world of Ambasadora. Mari's rare eye color makes her a pariah within Upper Caste society, which is why she prefers plants to people...except David, the former Armadan captain who shuttles scientists around on a refurbished pleasure cruiser. But someone else is interest...
