Hello Small Space Big Life friends!

We've been hard at work revising HANK book 2, drafting META book 2, outlining SUMMER book 1, and developing an exciting, new nonfiction proposal. In the meantime, we have recaps and photos from Walt Disney World, Broadkill Writers Retreat, and the SHUWPF Summer Residency. There's also another giveaway, books we've been reading, and a new feature where we detail part of our 980-square-foot urban cottage. It's over 80 years old now, and we've spent a quarter of that time taking care of every little nook and cranny, decorating it with art from our travels and gifts from family and friends, and making it as hygge as possible. Grab a cup of something nice and come take a look.

Cheers,
Heidi and Jason
As writers, we crave inspiration and a new perspective for our creativity. Joining friends and other creators at Broadkill Writers Resort is one of the best ways for Jason and me to pause and reimagine. This retreat is run by one of our publishers, Raw Dog Screaming Press, and the owners, Jennifer Barnes and John Edward Lawson who are pictured with us above.

Ten minutes from the town of Milton and along the Delaware Bay, this large, but quaint, resort home is just past Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge, 10,000 acres of marshes, ponds, swamps, grasslands, and forest that provide protection for threatened and endangered species. The beach is never crowded, giving it an almost solitary feel and perfect for reflection and rejuvenation. We've been there a dozen times and have some great traditions now, like crab boils, puzzle builds, and beach campfires. I'm sure we'll be heading back a couple more times this year, too.

Small Space Big Life community, we're deep into what we call Little Summer, that magical couple of months between our birthdays when we're the same age. In this quarter's newsletter, we have lots to share from places other than our house, including Jason's latest honor. Find out where we went, who we saw, and what we did. Maybe we just might be seeing you in-person someplace soon. Also, check out our latest giveaway, books we've been reading, and what's next in our writing journey. There might even be a few subscriber-only surprises inside.

Happy Little Summer,

Here is an excerpt:
Sara Light-Waller (SLW) Hello Heidi, thank you for joining us! Let’s start with your background. When did you first know you wanted to be a writer?

Heidi Ruby Miller (HRM) I wrote my first story — The Copper Kitty Mystery — in second grade and listed “romance novelist” as one of my high school ambitions. But I didn’t become serious about it until my late twenties, right before I found Seton Hill’s graduate program in Writing Popular Fiction. I haven’t stopped writing since.
Excited to have a new story from the Ambasadora-verse in this debut anthology from Cabbit Crossing Publishing.

Here's an excerpt from my foreword for "Mastering Aesthetics."

"I wanted to continue the feminist theme [from Marked by Light] and expand upon it in “Mastering Aesthetics,” which takes place just after the events of Marked by Light and leads into an upcoming tie-in novel Frostfall (From the World of Ambasadora). It will be my first time writing a dragon space opera. I like to shake things up a bit. Rest assured that Xin, Olivia, and the mysterious dragon-person will be making appearances in Frostfall.
This is the second published short story from the Ambasadora-verse. The first was “Rainer” in Far Worlds (The Bolthole, 2014). The two stories take place concurrently."
Jason and I had the honor of being interviewed by Marx Pyle and Julie Seaton at GenreTainment. Here's the information and link:
"On this episode we’re chatting with two very special guests, authors and professors Heidi Ruby Miller and Jason Jack Miller. It’s an edutainment packed episode as we talk about the value of an MFA, what a Popular Fiction MFA program is like compared to the more common creative writing graduate programs, Heidi’s Ambasadora books, Jason’s Hellbender book and his possible “Snot Otter” book, Appalachian culture, writing about other cultures, writing in someone else’s fictional setting, the charity anthology and online event, tips on co-writing, staying productive, and more!

The turnout for the Like Sunshine After Rain launch was incredible. It was two whole days of author readings and panels, raffles every half hour, and special appearances. Thanks to John Edward Lawson of AllAccessCon for months of hard work putting this event together. So far, we’ve raised $3100 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society with more orders coming in.

Though the special edition lettered hardcovers sold out quickly, you can still purchase a numbered edition of the trade paperback:

FROM THE PENNWRITERS WEBSITE:
The 34th Annual Pennwriters Conference is coming your way virtually. Registration is now open for the three-day conference and for two intensives held the day before the conference. Except for sitting with friends in the lounge and at meals, the conference will still have all the parts you love! Keynote Speakers are Susan Meier and Eileen Enwright Hodgetts. The conference begins at 9:00 am on Friday, May 14 and runs through Sunday, May 16.

I will be teaching:

"Write the Book They Can't Put Down"
Heidi will guide you through tips based on her article "The Shifting Grail: A Quest for a Good Read" from the international award-winning writing guide Many Genres, One Craft: Lessons in Writing Popular Fiction. Using examples from well-known movies and literature, she'll show how character motivation can dictate pacing and suspense, making your book one readers can't put down. There will be lots of opportunities to apply these tips to your WIP or to a new project.

"Middle Grade, In-Betweener, or Young Adult?"
When pre-teens and early teens want to read about characters in their age group, they are sometimes out of luck so they either go for younger (MG) or older (YA) protagonists, but now there's INB. Which writers are writing for this formative demographic, and what great works have they given us? This workshop is based on Heidi's article for the January 2020 issue of The Writer magazine.

Hope to see you on the screen!

From the foreword by Heidi Ruby Miller:
“When someone I loved was diagnosed with stage 4 leukemia in the middle of the pandemic, I spiraled into an existential disquiet. Everything was going wrong everywhere, and I felt helpless. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society was there for my family in so many ways, including guidance and emotional support. I wanted to help them and also give myself purpose. I did what I do best, I wrote…and I asked others for their writing with only two requests:

It must be upbeat.
It must be under 1500 words.

I heard the groans right through my email. That’s a pretty tight word limit. And, even those writers who weren’t part of the horror scene said they didn’t exactly go for upbeat in their projects. But they all agreed to try. And something unforeseen happened. My writing friends were experimenting with forms and genres, writing out of their comfort zones, sharing personal connections to cancer, to fear, to overcoming their sadness, and they thanked me for it.

Their willingness to search for the positive became an unexpected time capsule of perseverance and pushing onward when so many of us struggled to make it through one day at a time.”

I wrote an article for The Pennwriter based on my and Jason's workshop "Staying Creative, Staying Productive" for AllAccessCon, the media arm of RDSP. We added the subtitle: (But Only If You Want To).

Here's an excerpt:

Once social distancing began in March 2020, AllAccessCon’s audience of creators needed them more than ever because most of those creators found themselves frozen by the stress and surrealness of living through a pandemic. Jason and I were chosen for the workshop because we weren’t frozen we’d actually managed to increase our productivity during this time. That’s not because we’re more professional or superhuman or harbor a particularly effusive joie de vivre attitude. We wrote (we write) to battle the fear, the sadness, the daily existential crises. We needed routine, stability, escape.

If you need any of those things, maybe the following will help, but if it doesn’t and you can’t produce right now, let me be the first to tell you that it’s okay. This is a terrible time, no hyperbole necessary. You’ll come back to writing. Maybe after reading this article, maybe next month or a year from now. You’ll come back when you can, when writing helps you deal with the stress, not adds to it. That being said, here’s what we shared with the workshop group that day. It’s divided into four main categories: SCHEDULING, OUTLINING, EXERCISING, and RESTING.Heidi Ruby Millerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02190166838730021237noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31505433.post-83880453599994505672021-02-22T07:12:00.001-05:002021-02-22T07:14:28.383-05:00EVENT: SCBWI Winter Conference

This weekend I attended my first ever SCBWI (Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators) conference. Even virtual it was inspiring and so much fun. From the pre-conference socials to the Golden Kite Awards ceremony, hosted by Jennifer Garner, to the tour of Simon and Schuster, and the many agent and editor panels, there was always a sense of commitment to providing young readers with quality, important, and entertaining books. I could feel the warm vibes from our various speakers right through the computer screen. Such positive energy. I've put aside time today to review some of the tapes for concurrent sessions I wasn't able to attend. I can't imagine what these conferences are like in person, but I'm excited to find out. Thanks to everyone who made this such a lovely experience. We’ve made some plans for 2021 in the seventh volume of our combined newsletter Small Space Big Life. They’re fluid, and, if last year taught us anything, it’s that our built-in flexibility keeps us from falling apart (mostly) when things go awry.
There are some appearances ahead, mostly virtual but maybe something in-person by fall? In any event, I had some nice news to begin the year, and we still wanted to share reading recommendations and some original works for our subscribers, as well as hosting an international giveaway. Thanks for hanging around with us!
The January 2021 Seton Hill Writing Popular Fiction residency was once again virtual, but Jason and I had a wonderful time in critique workshops, thesis defenses, genre dinners, craft modules, and book discussions. Thank you to the WPF Director, Dr. Nicole Peeler, for making this remote residency run so smoothly. Having SHUWPF alum V.M. Burns as our visiting professor was inspiring to all as she spoke of her success after Seton Hill as a mystery writer.
We can't wait to see what these new graduates will accomplish. Congratulations to them all, including my mentees Marx Pyle and Victoria Scott.Heidi Ruby Millerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02190166838730021237noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31505433.post-14442599091841387222021-01-12T15:06:00.002-05:002021-01-12T19:00:25.819-05:00AFFILIATIONS: International Association of Media Tie-In Writers

Happy to report that I was accepted into the International Association of Media Tie-In Writers (IAMTW) for Man of War, my sequel to Science Fiction Grandmaster Philip Jose Farmer's Two Hawks from Earth.
